Rangoli is another beautiful art form
of India. The word “rangoli” originated from two words Rang
which means colors and Holi which means celebration. It is an artistic
celebration of colors. In physics, all colors originate from white light which
is why giving thanks to the sun or white light is significant in the everyday lives
of Indians. Light is a mystic significance of cosmic stillness available to you
beneath all colors of emotions.

Rangoli serves as a sacred welcoming area for the guests and Hindu
deities. Colored rice grains, flower petals, dry flour and colored sand are used in order to create such unique patterns found on the ground of
living rooms, courtyards and at the doorstep of a house. Traditionally, the leading lady of the house or
mothers drew these after taking a bath and praying. However, as
time passed by any woman in the house made it and sometimes young girls make
them together with their friends. The lovely art is mostly showcased during occasions such as festivals like Diwali (Indian New
Year), auspicious observances, marriage celebrations and other similar
milestones and gatherings.

Aside from having rangoli as a decoration and thanks giving to the sun
god, it is also believed to bring good luck, prosperity and growth. It brings
welfare to the family. The colors of the rangoli bring certain tranquility to a
person as they remind people of a temple since this art is found in temples as
well. Rangoli is the origin of spirituality thru art in
India.

Rangoli patterns range from geometric shapes, flowers, deity
impressions and very intricate designs crafted by a group of people. A variety
of patterns represent the traditions, beliefs and practices of each area. The
art form and traditions are kept alive since the designs have been passed on
from generation to generation.
Until next time,
